Our Story

A Message From Our Founder

In winter of 2023, Red Hook Mutual Aid helped me organize a field trip for native NYC high schoolers and new teenage migrants at the Brooklyn Museum. At first, it was difficult to overcome the language barrier and start conversation; none of us had ever led an English class or were prepared for what we were getting ourselves into. But after exploring, we went learned how to use hand gestures and google translate to get to know each other better. My peers and I were so impressed by how determined all of the migrants were to remember all the words we taught them, and by the end of the day, we were all touched by each other’s kindness and left the museum chatting and laughing.

I was determined to preserve this community and create a safe place for young migrants to network with people their own age. Since then, I’ve led a small class at the Brooklyn Public Library for teen migrants every Friday. People circle through, both new and native New Yorkers, making new connections and starting new conversations.

NextGen Voices isn’t a normal English class. Instead of rushing through material, we spend time truly understanding everyday concepts, welcoming immigrants into the NY community through language. We call dozens of lawyers, accompany students to immigration court, raise money for student stipends, and bring guest teachers in coding and entrepreneurship.

In the face of hate and polarization, we continue to stand strong. Even if there are ICE agents outside of the door, we will fiercely protect every member of our community.
